Digitsu Review: The Best BJJ App For Instructionals?

By Tsavo NealLearning BJJLeave a Comment

digitsu review

Digitsu is a subscription-based BJJ instructional website and app.

Instead of shelling out the big bucks for one instructional (*cough* BJJ Fanatics *cough*), you get access to 1000s of BJJ videos for $24.99 monthly.

And for that reason, it’s one of the best tools to help you get better at BJJ faster.

digitsu review

With the help of Digitsu, I’ve finally started to get my berimbolo to work during rolling.

Here’s how I’ve been using Digitsu to work on this technique.

Before and after class, I watch some of Gianni Grippo’s “All About The Bolo” instructional on Digitsu.

Using my BJJ journal, I take notes on what I’m trying to acheive. After class, I write down what worked, what didn’t, and notes for next class.

This has helped the berimbolo finally “click” for me.

Having Digitsu is like having a world-champion BJJ coach in your pocket.

In this in-depth review, I’ll break down everything you need to know about Digitsu — and how to use it to speed up your BJJ progress.

Digitsu Review Summary

⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐ (5/5 Stars)

When you compare Digitsu to other BJJ instructional platforms in terms of video catalog, price, and user experience, it’s my favorite BJJ instructional platform. For the price of a Netflix subscription, you get access to over 1,000 videos and over 50 full-length instructional videos from the best grapplers in the world. It’s like having the world’s best grapplers and teachers in your pocket. It has helped me learn techniques quickly and improve at jiu-jitsu faster. And for that reason, it’s my #1 BJJ instructional app. If you’d like to try it yourself, use code BJJEQUIP at checkout to get 25% off!

Digitsu Website & App Overview: How It Works

So, you buy Digitsu because you want to get better at BJJ faster.

How do you actually use this thing?

I’ll show ya.

Digitsu is broken down into 3 main components.

1. Catalog

The catalog is where you’ll spend 90% of your time on Digitsu. It’s the video library with all of the instructionals.

digitsu video catalog

Digitsu “Catalog” page

At the top, you’ll see the videos you’re currently watching so you can quickly continue whichever instructional you’re on. You’ll also see any videos you’ve favorited.

Underneath that, you’ll see the entire catalog categorized by gi or no-gi, submissions, sweeps, etc.

digitsu video catalog

Digitsu instructionals library

And at the very bottom, you’ll see the live Q&A streams.

Now, let’s say you want to get better at a specific technique. We’ll take my berimbolo example.

Go over to the search bar and type whichever technique or position you want to improve.

Once you do that, you’ll be shown all of the instructional videos related to your search query.

Bon appétit!

Personally, I like to watch Digitsu content on my phone before class. And then I track my progress with my BJJ journal.

When you have Digitsu + a BJJ journal, you’ll make far faster progress than your peers.

2. BJJ Chatbot

The Digitsu BJJ Chatbot is a cool new feature on the platform.

digitsu bjj ai chatbot

You can ask it any related question about BJJ and you’ll get a much better answer than ChatGPT.

Here’s an example of a prompt and answer:

“Give me tips for finishing my d’arce choke.”

Answer

“Here are some tips for finishing your D’Arce choke effectively:

Maintain Tightness: Ensure your grip is tight and secure. Your choking arm should be deep under the opponent’s neck, and your other arm should grab your bicep firmly.

Proper Positioning: Keep your body close to your opponent. Your chest should be pressed against their shoulder, and your head should be close to their head to prevent them from escaping.

Angle and Pressure: Drop your weight and angle your body to apply pressure. Roll to your side if necessary to tighten the choke and increase the pressure on their neck.

Leg Positioning: Hook their leg with your leg if possible to control their movement and prevent them from rolling out of the choke.

Squeeze and Compress: Squeeze your elbows together and compress their neck and shoulder. Use your head to push against their shoulder to increase the choke’s effectiveness.

Rolling Finish: If your opponent tries to roll to escape, roll with them to maintain the choke. Keep their leg hooked and continue to apply pressure as you complete the roll.

Transition from Guillotine: If you start with a guillotine and your opponent defends, transition to the D’Arce by threading your arm through and securing the choke.

From Turtle Position: If your opponent turtles up, use your forearm behind their head and shoulder under their armpit to flip them back to side control and secure the D’Arce.

Stay on Your Shoulder: Avoid laying flat on the ground. Stay on your shoulder to maintain pressure and control.

Practice and Adjust: Continuously practice the choke and adjust based on feedback from your training partners and coach.

By focusing on these key points, you can improve your ability to finish the D’Arce choke effectively.”

And then within the chatbot, it links to specific videos that will help you SEE what the chatbot is talking about.

digitsu chatbot example

Pretty neat, huh?

I use this feature when a random BJJ question pops into my head and my coach isn’t around to answer it for me.

You could try building your own with ChatGPT, but it’s a white belt. I bet you the Digtsu AI would smesh ChatGPT if they were to grapple.

3. Community

On the community tab, you can chat with other Digitsu subscribers.

It seems quite inactive for now. But here, the founder Shawn, will share product updates.

People here ask questions about the product, BJJ, and their training progress.

digitsu community

It’s a neat feature, and I’d like to see more people using it.

If you want to talk to other grapplers who are serious about their training, here’s the place to do it.

And if you want to ask me a question there, please do! Type @Tsavo and you’ll be able to reach me on Digitsu.

Who Should Buy Digitsu?

If you’re in the market for BJJ instructionals to level up your training, there are 3 specific situations where Digitsu makes the most sense.

1. You want to get better at BJJ faster

This is why we all buy instructionals in the first place, right? So we can improve our BJJ. In addition to learning from our instructor and coaches, we can learn from the world’s best instructors from the comfort of our home or on our phone. And Digitsu is awesome if you want to get better at BJJ faster.

darce choke submission

Digitsu + BJJ Journal + Grappling SMARTY 2.0 = Rapid Improvement

Let me tell you a story from my training. As a 2-stripe purple belt, I figured I wanted to improve my berimbolo. So on the skytrain to class, I bring up Digitsu on my phone. I type in “berbimbolo.” To my delight, I see an entire berimbolo instructional by UFC BJJ star Gianni Grippo. I watch some of the videos before class, and I try it out during my rolls. I end up hitting 5 berimbolo back takes during my rolls — all thanks to reviewing the Digitsu videos.

This is where Digitsu excels. If you want to improve any aspect of your game, you’ll find the best instructionals on Digitsu. It’s easy to use on both your computer and laptop. And the teachers they choose are top-notch. It feels like I’ve just purchased a group of world-class BJJ coaches that’s available for me 24/7.

2. You’re willing to do specific training

The key to improving your BJJ with instructionals is to actually work on the material you watch. If you watch an instructional but you don’t practice what you watch, you won’t integrate the instructional content into your game. So, if you’re going to buy Digitsu, make sure you’re willing to do this type of specific training.

digitsu search function

Digitsu search function for “berimbolo”

Personally, I don’t always do specific training. But when I want to learn something new, I train it specifically. In my berimbolo example in point 1, I made it my goal to hit the berimbolo over any other technique. After specifically training this technique, I finally feel like I’ve begun to understand how it works and how I can integrate it into my game.

Instructionals and specific training go hand in hand. If you have Digitsu but you don’t do specific training, it’ll be hard to integrate what you learn into your game. And if you don’t have Digitsu, you won’t have a library of positions and techniques to specifically train. It’s when you have both that the magic happens.

3. You don’t want to spend $350 dollars on a single instructional

BJJ Fanatics has some awesome instructionals. I’ve purchased a few myself, and they’ve been super helpful. However, you can’t deny that they break the bank. For the cost of a single instructional on BJJ Fanatics, you can get several months of Digitsu.

Back to my berimbolo example. When I decided I wanted to learn more about it, I simply opened Digitsu, searched for “berimbolo,” and found plenty of material. If I wanted to do the same on BJJ Fanatics, I’d have to buy an entirely new berimbolo instructional. In that sense, Digitsu is more like Netflix, BJJ Fanatics is more like Blockbuster.

bjj fanatics pricing

$350 for one instructional? Yeah…no thanks.

Digitsu is great for grapplers who want to watch instructionals to improve their game — but who also want to save money. The monthly subscription is $24.99 (and you can get 25% off your first month using the code BJJEQUIP).

I canceled my Netflix account for it. I’d rather get better at BJJ than watch Love Is Blind season 10, wouldn’t you?

Who Shouldn’t Buy Digitsu?

Despite it being my favorite BJJ instructionals platform, there are 2 scenarios where I wouldn’t recommend you invest in Digitsu.

1. You don’t care about getting better faster

I have some training partners who, if they’re being honest, don’t particularly care about improving super fast. They’re happy enough to show up to class, hang out with their friends, get some exercise, and call it a day. They aren’t the type to watch instructionals or focus on the “mental” side of BJJ training.

If that’s you, that’s OK. Digitsu and other BJJ instructional platforms aren’t for you. I could tell you to buy it, but even if you did, you wouldn’t watch it. And if you did watch it, you wouldn’t apply it. Digitsu is best for grapplers who are more serious about their improvement.

canceled netflix

Yes…I really did cancel my Netflix account for Digitsu.

2. You don’t like watching instructionals

I also have some training partners who love training BJJ, but they hate watching it. They don’t watch exciting BJJ tournaments like CJI or UFC, let alone instructional content. They’d rather go to class and learn BJJ in person from our instructor.

If that sounds like you, skip out on Digitsu. Digitsu is full of BJJ instructionals. If you don’t like BJJ instructionals, you won’t like Digitsu.

A small caveat: I find that the quality of instructors on Digitsu is very high. Being an amazing BJJ competitor doesn’t necessarily make you a great teacher. So if you’ve found it hard to learn from other instructionals, but you’re still willing to try and learn, you might just need to find a teacher who can teach you in a way YOU learn.

And if you’re going to find that teacher anywhere, you’ll find that teacher on Digitsu.

Digitsu Pros

There’s a lot to love about Digitsu. When I compare it to the other BJJ instructional platforms I’ve used, here are three reasons it stands out.

1. Impressive BJJ Instructional Catalogue

Digitsu comes with over 1000 videos across 50 full-length instructional courses. Getting dozens of high-quality instructionals is a steal for this price.

The instructional library covers the entire breadth of jiu-jitsu. From fundamentals like half guard and leg drag passing to specific submissions like the d’arce and triangle chokes, Digitsu covers it all. Instead of wasting time on YouTube looking for specific techniques, I come to Digitsu to learn a move in a systematic, step-by-step course.

digitsu membership benefits

One thing I like about Digitsu’s catalog, in particular, is the quality of their instructors. I’m sure you’ve tried to learn a technique from an excellent grappler. But the way they taught it just didn’t “click” for you. On Digitsu, every instructional I’ve watched has “clicked” for me. I don’t know how they choose their teachers. But whatever they’re doing, it’s working.

2. Easy-to-Use Website & Digital App

BJJ instructionals won’t do you any good if they’re a chore to access and watch. The user interface and user experience on Digitsu are seamless and simple to use. It’s clean, well-organized, and fast. That makes for a superior learning experience over other platforms.

digitsu mobile app

Digitsu mobile app view

Since I take the bus and skytrain to class, what I do is open up the Digitsu mobile app on my iPhone. I’ll think about what I want to specifically train in class. Then, using Digitsu, I’ll review whichever position or technique I’m going to work on in class. I find it very helpful to watch an instructional video before class to prepare for my training. And it’s super easy to save an instructional or video to favorites so you can review your favorite material.

When I’m at home chilling in my sauna blanket, I’ll put Digitsu on my TV via Chromecast, and that also works flawlessly. This is great when you’re in the mood for some BJJ content without the distraction of cute cat videos on YouTube or dancing influencers on Instagram or TikTok. I’ll do this when I want to explore how the pros do BJJ. Everything with both the website and app works flawlessly, making it much easier to learn from the best.

3. Flexible Pricing Structure

The flexible pricing structure for Digitsu is a huge pro. I know plenty of grapplers who just aren’t willing to shell out hundreds of dollars for a single instructional. With Digitsu’s monthly, yearly, and per-instructional pricing structure, you have many options for how to use the platform.

digitsu membership pricing

Digitsu pricing options

I’ve tried all of the BJJ instructional platforms out there. I think a monthly subscription is the best model for most grapplers. I’ll rarely work on a single technique for 3 months. I like to work on many different techniques and positions at the same time. If you buy a half guard instructional and then a week later you want to work on your closed guard, it’s super easy to do that with Digitsu. But if you’re using BJJ Fanatics, you have to buy a new instructional every time you want to work on a new technique.

Or, maybe you only want a single instructional. With Digitsu, you can grab one for less than what it would cost on other platforms. But the fact that they offer multiple pricing options is a huge benefit for grapplers who prefer to digest or watch instructionals at their own pace.

Digitsu Cons

Digitsu is a 5-star BJJ instructional platform, but it’s not perfect. Here are a few things I’d like to see them improve on.

1. Missing Some Of My Favorite Instructors

You won’t find instructionals by Gordon Ryan, John Danaher, Craig Jones, or Mikey Musumeci on Digitsu. I’ve bought their instructionals, and they’re awesome. So it sucks that Digitsu doesn’t have some of the best grapplers on the platform.

That being said, I wouldn’t have been introduced to incredible instructors like Gianni Grippo, Mason Fowler, and Eddie Cummings if I didn’t have Digitsu. Learning from multiple instructors is a great way to find new insights and perspectives on the same technique or position.

digitsu instructors

You never know whose teaching style works best for you until you expand your horizons.

2. Some Videos Look A Bit Dated

Some of the videos on Digitsu look a bit old and dated. That doesn’t mean they’re bad — they’re excellent in terms of their instructional value. But if you’re a stickler for 4K video produced within the last few years, you might be disappointed in some of the videos on Digitsu.

However, Digitsu will be adding 1 new instructional per month. I’d imagine they’ll continue to work on their production quality so that new videos look amazing.

Remember: dated doesn’t mean bad. The Wire and The Sopranos are dated, but they’re still the greatest TV shows of all time. Sometimes it’s the older, hidden gems that have the most value!

Digitsu Pricing Breakdown & Coupon Code

Digitsu comes at 3 price points: monthly, yearly, and per instructional.

REMINDER: You can use code BJJEQUIP to save 25% on any of the 3 options listed above.

Option 1: $24.99 per month

This monthly option gives you access to all instructionals, the BJJ chatbot, member community, live Q&As, and gear discounts.

It’s a great option if you want to make a small monthly investment for access to everything Digitsu has to offer.

Option 2: $239.99 per year

This annual option gives you access to all instructionals, the BJJ chatbot, member community, live Q&As, and gear discounts.

This option is slightly cheaper than the monthly subscription price over the long run. You pay once a year, and you get access to all of Digitsu.

Option 3: $24.99-$69.99 per instructional

You can also buy a Digitsu instructional for $24.99-$69.99, but you won’t get access to the other Digitsu features.

So if you want to learn leg locks from Eddie Cummings, back control from Mason Fowler, or half guard from Paul Schriener — and you don’t care for the other instructionals on the platform — this is a great option for you.

I still recommend going for the monthly or yearly option because you’ll get access to these specific instructionals and all others. But if you truly just want 1 instructional for a one-time fee, the option is available to you.

digitsu pricing options monthly vs annual

Personally, I use their monthly option. I consider it a worthy investment in my favorite hobby. Having instant access to everything I want to learn in BJJ makes it a no-brainer for me.

Digitsu: Final Thoughts & Discussion

So there you have it: everything you wanted to know about Digitsu, my favorite BJJ instructional website and app.

For a small monthly fee, you can have instant access to a complete library of BJJ knowledge.

Combine that with BJJ journaling and specific training, and you’ll be able to make rapid progress in BJJ.

It’s been a great asset to my training thus far. It’s given me an entirely new way to learn outside of my head coach.

What is YOUR favorite BJJ instructional platform? Is it Digitsu, or another website?
