I’m thrilled to announce that I’ve published my book BJJ For Beginners: How To Level-Up From Newbie To Confident Grappler Even If You’re Starting From Scratch!

I wrote this book to help people get started in BJJ the right way.
So they can not just “survive” as a white belt, but actually enjoy this part of the journey.
This is the book I wish I had when I first started Brazilian jiu-jitsu.
I wrote it specifically for beginners:
- Potential grapplers: people who are thinking about starting BJJ.
- Fresh white belts: people who are in their first year or two of training.
With all of the other BJJ books and resources out there, why did I write this book?
There are plenty of amazing books, videos, and instructionals for how to learn techniques.
BJJ For Beginners is NOT a technique book.
Sure, I explain the positional hierarchy and the highest-percentage submissions.
But the main problem that my book solves is helping beginners learn how to learn.
When I first came to the sport, I had great technical BJJ instruction.
However, I still felt lost, overwhelmed, and didn’t know what to focus on.
And that’s why I believe only 10% white belts get their blue belt. 90% of white belts quit.
Would 90% of white belts quit if they…
- Understood the lifestyle benefits of training Brazilian jiu-jitsu?
- Found an amazing gym that is the perfect fit for them and their training goals?
- Learned how to be a great training partner so the upper belts would be happy to help them improve?
- Knew exactly what to work on, and why?
- Had a plan for training specifically on the right things?
I don’t think so.
Ultimately, I want to reduce the dropout rate in BJJ.
And BJJ For Beginners is my solution to the problem: making the journey smoother and more enjoyable for new grapplers.

Why BJJ For Beginners Is Different
Like I mentioned above, BJJ For Beginners is NOT a book about techniques.
Instead, it focuses on the intangibles and mental side of learning the sport.
So, you’ll learn things like…
- How to find a gym you’ll actually enjoy going to
- How to become everyone’s favorite training partner
- What to expect at your first BJJ class (& how to prepare)
- BJJ gear that you need versus BJJ gear that’s optional
- The solo movements and primary positions that make up the sport
- How to learn new techniques and incorporate them into your game with a journal
- How the world’s best BJJ minds — like Gordon Ryan and John Danaher — think about and teach BJJ
- How to map out your path to blue belt and beyond
This comes from my experience both as a practitioner and someone who teaches the intro class for all new grapplers at my gym.
As a two-stripe purple belt, I’m advanced enough to teach white belts…but I’m not so far advanced that I’ve forgotten what it feels like to be a beginner.
So, grab the book and you’ll…
- Avoid the most common white belt mistakes
- Progress through your first 4 stripes quicker than your peers
- Enjoy training more with less frustration
- Build a strong foundation for a lifetime of BJJ
